Overview

A fire tore through a two-story row house on 58th Street in Brooklyn's Sunset Park neighborhood early Thursday, Nov. 5, killing six people. The New York fire department said the fire was reported at about 1:40 a.m. More than 200 first responders went to the scene, and the blaze was brought under control in about three hours. Four people died at the scene.

Two others, critically injured, were later pronounced dead. At least seven others were hurt, including three firefighters with minor injuries. Four people suffered non-life-threatening injuries, the department said.

Fire operations chief Kevin Woods said firefighters rescued four people, including two who were trapped behind window bars. Fire marshals are working to establish the cause. Officials found a lithium-ion battery at the scene, and the department said it does not know whether it played any part.

The names of the victims have not been released. Mayor Zohran Mamdani said at a news conference, "This was a devastating fire," and that the neighborhood will need a long time to mourn and recover.

the dead, trapped residents and battery fire risk

The Independent's headline stresses victims trapped behind window bars, and it quotes Kevin Woods, the department's chief of fire operations: "Upon arrival, we had fire on every floor." ABC News runs the AP wire report, which opens with six dead, seven injured and more than 200 responders. The Boston Globe, also running AP, counts nine injured, including two police officers.

It adds city records: complaints filed in 2025 said the basement was being illegally converted and built on without a permit, and inspectors who visited several times could not get in. The Guardian gives the most room to Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who praised firefighters, raised fire prevention and said the city is "really looking at every avenue." It notes a nationwide rise in fires sparked by lithium-ion batteries.

All four say the cause is not determined and that it is unknown whether the battery found is related.

timeline, response details and victims' hospital care

UPI reports officials' details: firefighters arrived within three minutes and 18 seconds, and officials believe the fire started on the second floor. It describes where injured people were taken, including a man with burned feet and a woman treated for smoke inhalation. BBC News says more than 230 personnel were sent, with a hazardous-materials crew called because of the lithium-ion battery.

It notes US media reports varied on whether two victims died in hospital or on the way. The Seattle Times runs the AP wire report, with four dead at the scene, two later pronounced dead and no names released. The Journal reports that six people were killed and seven others injured, and that authorities are investigating the cause.

a deadly three-alarm blaze and the emergency response

The New York Post reports a "three-alarm blaze" at a Brooklyn home, and gives the fire department's 1:39 a.m. report on the 600 block of 58th Street. It says four people were pronounced dead at the scene and two others died after being taken to hospitals. Four others had non-life-threatening injuries, one of them serious, and three firefighters had minor injuries.

It describes photos of the "horrific aftermath," says fire marshals are actively investigating and notes the victims' identities were not released Thursday morning. Just the News leads with six killed and more than 230 emergency workers deployed. It cites the New York Times for firefighters arriving around 2 a.m. and says fire officials report two injured people remain at the hospital.

Both say the cause of the fire has not been established.
