Overview

A gunman killed a woman at Citibank's office campus in the Tampa area on Wednesday, Nov. 4, and an armed security guard then killed him, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said. Dispatchers began getting calls about gunfire at 12:11 p.m. Chief Deputy Frank Losat said the man drove through a fence and crashed into an outdoor area where employees were eating lunch. He got out with a rifle and shot the woman.

The guard confronted him in the cafeteria and the two exchanged fire. The gunman was taken to a hospital, where he died. Four other people were treated for injuries that were not life-threatening, and it was not clear how they were hurt.

About 3,200 people were on the campus. Sheriff Chad Chronister said, "We believe this is a targeted incident." Authorities have not named the gunman or the woman and have not released a motive.

Officers searched the buildings for roughly 2.5 hours. Losat praised the guard, saying, "Kudos to that security guard." Citi CEO Jane Fraser wrote to employees of "heartbreaking, awful news" and said security will be added at sites as necessary.

A security guard's shootout and witnesses' fear

The Independent leads with the guard's role: its headline says the gunman was shot by a security guard after killing a woman at a Citibank complex near Tampa. The story then turns to the shooter driving into a lunch area and opening fire. It says police believe the attack was targeted and quotes Chief Deputy Frank Losat: "Kudos to that security guard."

Witness accounts follow. Citibank vice president David Dzien tells the AP of an "incredible clatter" and says he can still hear the "particular type of scream." Another witness tells WTSP of "panicked faces."

The Independent also gives the numbers: 3,200 employees on campus and more than 365 officers. The Boston Globe runs an AP report whose headline says two are dead, including the suspect, as witnesses report a shooting. It carries Sheriff Chad Chronister's post, "We believe this is a targeted incident," and describes a floor-by-floor search.

Radio traffic, it says, showed officers escorting out people who had hidden in closets and locked rooms. It also quotes parent Doug Merritt, who did not know for around an hour whether his son was safe.

Guard kills gunman, Citi's CEO responds

UPI leads with the guard: a security guard shoots and kills a gunman at the Citibank Center complex in Brandon, Fla. Citing Chief Deputy Frank Losat, it reports that the gunman killed a woman eating lunch, that the guard confronted him as he moved toward the cafeteria and they traded gunfire, and that the guard was injured. It says four other people were treated for non-life-threatening injuries and that it is unclear how they were hurt.

UPI adds a memo from Citi Chair and CEO Jane Fraser, who wrote of "heartbreaking, awful news" and said the company will add security at its sites as necessary. The Seattle Times runs an AP alert headlined "Authorities swarm Florida business complex for 'active threat'" and built on the sheriff's office posts. It quotes Sheriff Chad Chronister: "We believe this is a targeted incident," adding that "the suspect involved is deceased."

NewsNation's headline says one victim is dead and the suspect killed after a "targeted" incident near Tampa, and it places the scene at Citibank's corporate campus in Brandon, which employs thousands.

Guard stops gunman, with bodycam and 911 audio

Fox News leads with video: the sheriff's office released edited bodycam footage and 911 calls of the response, and an officer in the footage announces, "Shooter is down." Fox says the first calls about shots fired reached dispatchers at 12:11 p.m., and the sheriff's office says deputies were there within a minute. It reports that the sheriff's office counted over 400 law enforcement personnel at the scene, 367 of them deputies.

It quotes Sheriff Chad Chronister: "this unhinged suspect was stopped before he could harm anyone else." The Daily Wire's headline reads "Gunman Opens Fire On Employees. A Security Guard Stops Him Cold."

It lays out a timeline from Losat's press conference, with the guard shooting the suspect at about 12:13 p.m., and adds accounts from Citi analyst Adara Evans and employee Cherron Martin. The Washington Examiner reports the toll, Losat's praise of the guard and a search of roughly 2.5 hours. The New York Post, in an early report drawing on scanner traffic, says sources believe the shooting involved a vendor at the facility, not Citibank employees.
