Overview

Iran said it has a "maximum deterrence" plan ready against any new US attack and warned of an immediate response. Iran says its military is widening its target lists to take in US and Israeli assets over larger areas. Parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said on Tuesday that any US strategic error would open "a new battlefield" and that the ball is in America's court to prevent war.

His words followed a reported US Air Force strike on an IRGC missile system on Qeshm Island. CENTCOM issued no formal statement on it, and no Iranian official formally confirmed it. On Monday, Trump said Iran wants a settlement "as soon as possible" and a deal "could happen."

Vice President JD Vance reported progress and said no deadline has been set. Tehran's position is that Washington must first end its naval blockade and fully satisfy Iran's demands, and only then can any agreement be reached. Separately, UK Maritime Trade Operations said an oil tanker was struck by two "unknown projectiles" near the .

The IRGC said three tankers exploded after hitting naval mines while crossing the strait "without permission."

Iran's deterrence warning and Tehran's deal conditions

Al Jazeera English's live coverage opens with Tehran's warning. In its latest update, Iran says a "maximum deterrence" plan is ready against any new US attack and promises an immediate response. Iran also says its military is revising its target lists to cover US and Israeli assets over wider areas.

The same update turns to the Strait of Hormuz, where UKMTO reports an oil tanker hit by two "unknown projectiles" and the IRGC says three tankers exploded after hitting naval mines while transiting "without permission." An earlier live post is headlined with Vance seeing "progress" and Tehran saying the "ball is in US court." It reports Tehran's position that Washington must first lift its naval blockade and satisfy Iran's demands fully, and only then can an agreement be reached.

Iran's warning of a wider war after Qeshm

Euronews leads with Iran warning of a "new battlefield" after a reported US strike on Qeshm. It quotes Ghalibaf saying "the ball is in America's court to prevent war" and notes that CENTCOM issued no statement and no Iranian official formally confirmed an attack. It adds the IRGC's claim of downing two US MQM-170 drones and destroying an MQ-9.

It cites former foreign minister Manouchehr Mottaki saying a war would be "extraregional." It also cites the Tehran-based Hamshahri newspaper, which reported that Iran had updated its "target bank" while examining a scenario of targeting US support bases and infrastructure in Europe. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi's backing for Gulf mediation closes the piece.

The Hill's short item is headlined with the speaker's "ball" line. It calls him Iran's chief negotiator, says Tehran gave Washington a "firm and rational response" on nuclear weapons and opening Hormuz, and notes he did not say what that response was.

Trump says Iran wants a deal soon

Breitbart News leads with Trump saying Iran wants a settlement "as soon as possible" and that a deal "could happen." It quotes his Truth Social post on oil prices "DROPPING LIKE A ROCK" and his words to Axios that "there is no rush." Vance tells reporters he and Trump "feel pretty good about the prospects for potentially coming to a negotiated settlement."

He adds that no deadline has been set and that verifiable assurances Iran will not rebuild its nuclear program matter most. The report also sets out Tehran's side: its demands include ending the naval blockade, relief and concessions on Hormuz shipping, and spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei says "the ball is in the U.S. court." It adds Reuters's report that Iranian negotiators left Doha without a breakthrough.

It also relays NBC's Garrett Haake saying Trump answered "No" when asked about striking after the midterms, and quotes Trump's Iowa remark about giving Iran "the hammer."
