Overview

Zohran Mamdani, New York City's Democratic mayor, threatened on Monday to take the Trump administration to court. His complaint is that Immigration and Customs Enforcement () is allegedly using city property. He wrote to Secretary Markwayne Mullin.

The letter was also addressed to acting ICE Director David Venturella and Kenneth Genalo, who directs the agency's New York field office. The letter says the city has given ICE no authorization to use the lots for immigration enforcement and does not authorize it. It says agents have reportedly parked vehicles and held meetings in several unstaffed city parking lots.

These include a lot at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx and, more recently, lots along 111th Street at Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens. The Queens lots sit next to a preschool run by the city and several cultural sites that children visit daily. At a Brooklyn press conference, Mamdani said the city is willing to go to court if ICE continues.

The New York Post reports that Mamdani earlier asked garage owners across the city to stop letting ICE use their property to stage operations.

Mamdani's court threat over ICE using city lots

The New York Post leads with Mamdani's threat to take the Trump administration to court if ICE does not stop what its headline calls, in quotation marks, "unlawful commandeering" of city-owned property. It calls the mayor "Hizzoner." It quotes the letter to Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin: "the City does not authorize ICE using its property in this manner."

It also quotes Mamdani at a Brooklyn press conference saying ICE has no right to use city property or lots "for anti-immigrant operations" and that "we are willing to go to court if they continue to do so." The Post names the Van Cortlandt Park lot in the Bronx and the Flushing Meadows Corona Park lots in Queens, the latter next to a city-run preschool. Just the News headlines the story as ICE "taking over" city property during operations.

It credits the Post for the letter's account, quotes the letter's lines that ICE "has not secured any authorization" and that the city "does not authorize" the use, and notes Mamdani spoke at an unrelated Monday press conference.
