The Guardian: Democratic lawmakers demand answers on hunger strikers at Texas immigration jail
The Guardian reports seven congressional Democrats wrote to DHS and ICE leaders, and ICE denies that detainees are being force-fed or threatened.
The Guardian reports that seven congressional Democrats, led by Illinois Rep. Delia Ramirez, wrote to Secretary Markwayne Mullin and acting director David Venturella about the El Valle detention facility in Raymondville, Texas. According to the paper, detainees on a hunger strike that began on 11 October say they face retaliation and force-feeding threats, and cite substandard medical care and undrinkable water. The lawmakers demand the strikers' release and ask that officials not force-feed anyone in custody. The Guardian says ICE called the threat allegations false, and DHS said lawmakers should thank law enforcement for removing dangerous criminals.
