Republican redistricting push falls short as Democrats hold most targeted House seats

The AP reports a Democratic surge fueled by unhappiness with Trump, the economy and the Iran war, which also cost Republicans seats they had counted on.

Overview

Republicans in eight states, according to the Associated Press, redrew dozens of congressional districts over the past year at President Trump's urging, hoping to hold a slim House majority in Tuesday's elections. The plan fell short. Republicans lost most of the Democratic-held seats they targeted and lost others they had counted on.

The AP ties the Democratic surge to unhappiness with Trump, the economy and the Iran war. In Texas, Democratic Reps. Henry Cuellar and Vicente Gonzalez won reelection, and Republican Rep. Monica De La Cruz lost. In Florida, Democrats held at least three of the four redrawn seats, and Democratic Rep. Darren Soto was narrowly ahead in the fourth, which had not been called.

Democratic Rep. Shomari Figures won reelection in Alabama. Courts blocked Missouri's new map, and Missouri voters rejected it in a on Tuesday. In California, a Democratic counter-redraw flipped Republican-held seats.

Some races stayed close. Roll Call reported Republican state Sen. Taylor barely ahead of Democratic state Rep. Justin Pearson in Tennessee's 9th District as of Wednesday afternoon. Axios says Republicans are on track to lose as many as eight seats in the redrawn states rather than gain the 15 they hoped for.

NewsNation reports Democrats had won 11 seats in redrawn districts as of Wednesday.

A Republican gerrymander that backfired and energized Democrats

The Boston Globe runs the AP report that the plan "didn't work," linking the Democratic surge to unhappiness over Trump, the economy and the Iran war. It quotes John Bisognano of the National Democratic Committee calling the result a "catastrophic rebuke" of Trump's effort. Axios focuses on maps and margins.

It says Republicans bet the 2026 electorate would look like 2024's, and it calls Tennessee's 4th District "perhaps the clearest example" of a "dummymander," where Democrat Victoria Broderick appears to have won by 280 votes. Mother Jones calls the strategy an "Epic Fail" and ties the result to Black turnout after the 's Voting Rights Act ruling. It quotes Rep. Shomari Figures saying district lines matter little when people face $4 gas.

The New Republic's headline says Republicans "tried to steal House seats" and it "backfired." It goes state by state and names Tennessee as an exception, where carving up Memphis weakened the city's Democratic vote.

District-by-district results of the redistricting gamble

Roll Call's piece on how redrawn districts voted says Republicans had expected the new maps to limit Democratic gains, and it calls Tuesday's result a blue "tsunami." It then goes state by state through the races. For many of the districts it says how much Trump would have carried them by in 2024.

It quotes Hakeem Jeffries, the top House Democrat: "Democrats were going to finish it." The Seattle Times runs the AP wire report. It quotes former Eric Holder saying the Trump plan "was systematically dismantled."

It also quotes law professor Justin Levitt: "I think it is likely that some line-drawers got cocky." The report also covers Maryland's amendment and possible Democratic redistricting before 2028. NewsNation's headline says the Trump push falls short as Democrats hold targets, and it reports Democrats had won 11 seats in redrawn districts as of Wednesday.

The Hill calls the mid-decade redistricting wars one of the biggest stories of the 2026 midterms and asks who won the redrawn seats.

Republican redistricting gamble backfired, with historic House losses

Fox News says in its headline that the redistricting efforts "blow up in Republicans' faces" amid historic House losses. It quotes a House Republican telling Fox News Digital "It was definitely the wrong move," and another person calling it "a bridge too far." It tallies Texas, Florida, Ohio and Alabama results, then notes Florida was a bright spot, with Byron Donalds winning the governor's race and all Republican incumbents keeping their seats.

Fox also says both parties took part in mid-decade redistricting, citing Gavin Newsom's California referendum. The Daily Caller's headline says Democrats are set to sweep all four seats DeSantis redrew. Its report says Democrats won at least three, with Soto leading by 0.6 points, and lists the margin in each race and the Trump margin in each seat.

It adds that the Congressional Leadership Fund cut $6 million in planned advertising against Moskowitz. It closes by tying the Republican losses to voter unhappiness over the Iran war, high prices and corruption.
