Overview

On Election Day in the , voters in Minneapolis and Houston put "I Voted" stickers on memorials to three people killed by federal immigration agents. In Minneapolis, the memorials honor Alex Pretti, an intensive care nurse, and Renee Good, a writer and mother of three. Both were US citizens, killed in January during a large immigration enforcement operation in the Minneapolis region.

Newsweek reports dozens of stickers there. In Houston, the memorial is for Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a father who worked in construction and was killed by in July. Handwritten notes there included "I voted for you" and "Por usted,"

Spanish for "for you." Newsweek counts more than 1,000 stickers on the Houston memorial as of late October. Newsweek says it began when his oldest son, Ronaldo Salgado, voted on Oct. 19 and put his sticker on the memorial.

He told the Washington Post he is "beyond touched," Axios reports. Minnesota voters are choosing a senator, a governor and House members.

Yahoo News reports that no federal law enforcement officials have been spotted so far, despite Trump administration threats to send them to voting sites.

voters turning grief over ICE killings into ballots

Axios opens with voters in Minneapolis and Houston leaving stickers at memorials and says the tributes show how the administration's "unpopular immigration crackdown" is motivating voters. It names Pretti and Good in Minneapolis and Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston, quotes his son Ronaldo Salgado saying he is "beyond touched," and cites an October NBC News/Telemundo poll in which 67% of Latino voters said enforcement has gone too far. Yahoo News ran a report from Minnesota that describes Trump's campaign as "aggressive and violent" and a key issue in the midterms.

It quotes Arne, a retired physician who knew Pretti, saying "he was assassinated," and a voter named Mike F., who wanted to "attach my vote to what happened here." It also quotes the Rev. Shandon Klein, who describes a "feeling of empowerment" at a polling place, and states that no federal law enforcement officials have been spotted so far.

the stickers, plus how each death unfolded

Newsweek opens with voters in Minneapolis and Houston leaving stickers on Election Day, then gives background on each death. It counts dozens of stickers in Minneapolis and more than 1,000 in Houston, and says reports from Minneapolis did not identify an organized effort there. It recounts that then- Secretary Kristi Noem called Good a "domestic terrorist" without providing evidence.

On Salgado Araujo, it says DHS first said he "weaponized his vehicle," then acknowledged he was not the person agents sought. It quotes Pretti's father: "What we have been treated to is cruelty." Newsweek also traces the White House's change of course after Pretti's death, Noem's firing on March 5 and Reuters/Ipsos polling that had Trump's immigration approval at 36 percent in September.

NewsNation reports that Minnesotans left stickers at the Good and Pretti memorials, and it quotes a voter saying the vote felt "a little bit more in touch with some of the things that happened."
